Pit 9901 is the first pit discovered in 1999 and is located to the southeast of the tomb area. It covers an area of 700 square meters with 2 sloping roadways.
This pit has a similar structure to those of the Terra-cotta Army Pits. It is about 4.9 meters in depth, and is composed of a wood and earth structure. This pit was also destroyed and burned at the end of the Qin Dynasty, so the figures have been smashed into thousands of pieces. The location of this pit indicates that it was very important.
We have unearthed 11 pottery figures and the "the biggest Bronze Tripod Ding" of the Qin Dynasty from the top layer of the pit during trial excavation. Most of the figures in this pit wear only a mini-skirt and they all have bare, expanded chests. They are all life-sized and present us with a new type of Qin Dynasty clay figure. We have temporarily named these figures "acrobatics figures(Baixi)".
Baixi is a term used in the past to refer to all kinds of popular games like acrobatics and some sports. According to an analysis of the restored figures, archaeologists think that these pottery figures might be the acrobats who served in the First Emperor's imperial palace, portraying the splendid acrobatic arts of the Qin Dynasty.
